Microfiber Benefits in Hospital Cleaning

Two hospital studies have shown that microfiber mops clean better, reduce water and chemical usage, and cost less in the long term.

One 2002 study (available as an EPA Fact Sheet), called Using Microfiber Mops in Hospitals, quantified savings at the University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento. Figures illustrate 60 percent savings for mops alone and 95 percent savings for cleaning chemicals. Based on cleaning 100 patient rooms, the cotton mops needed 105 gallons of water, the microfiber versions only 5 gallons. Because the microfiber mops were easier and faster to use, the hospital saved about 640 hours of labor, equal to almost $8,000 in wages.

Under a 2003 study by the Sustainable Hospitals Project at the University of Massachusetts, one Boston-area hospital began a pilot program to compare microfiber mopping with the conventional wet loop mop-and-bucket system. “The microfiber mopping system appears to be favorable to wet loop mopping in reducing ergonomic risk factors and in making the worker’s job less physically taxing,” the study reports.
