Cleaning Autoclaves
PROCEDURE TO CLEAN AUTOCLAVES
Cleaning Tools & Materials Needed:
1. Cleaner-disinfectant
2. Spray bottle
3. Wire brush
4. Clean cloths
5. Gloves and personal protective equipment
Cleaning Procedures:
DAILY CLEANING:
1. Damp dust the outside of the autoclave with cleaner-disinfectant solution and a soft, clean cloth and wipedry to avoid streaking.
WEEKLY CLEANING:
1. Verify that the autoclave has been turned off and has cooled. Remove all items that have been sterilized from the inside of the autoclave.
2. Using a narrow wire brush, remove all the debris and rust from the edges and grooves in the autoclave.
3. With the germicidal detergent solution, thoroughly wash the interior and exterior of the autoclave. Rinse all washed surfaces with clear water and wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth.
4. If the autoclave has removable grates, scrub with a wire brush and germicidal solution before replacing inside the autoclave. Rinse grate, wipe dry, and replace inside autoclave.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
1. Autoclaves are sometimes cleaned by Central Supply personnel rather than housekeeping personnel. Ask your supervisor if you are responsible for cleaning autoclaves.
