Coating Floor Finish
Applying Multiple Coats of Floor Finish
It usually takes at least two or more coats of floor finish before a freshly stripped floor has a shine. Drying times can vary depending on the humidity in the air, if the area is cold or hot, and the amount of fresh air in the area itself. Most finishes dry within 30 to 45 minutes but because of the variables mentioned, it can be much longer.
If the previous coat of wax has not dried properly, all of your efforts may be in vane. Additional coats of finish will not adhere properly and the floor may need to be re-stripped.
A simple way to see if the finish is truly dry is to place a paper towel on the floor. Step on the towel while twisting your foot. If the paper slides freely, the floor is dry. If it sticks in some areas or even breaks apart, the floor is not dry.
