10 Easy Steps to Creating a Hygienic Restroom
In several national surveys about the restroom, one theme stands out: the importance of a clean and hygienic bathroom. Time after time, the results have shown that sanitation and supply run-out are top concerns for restroom visitors.
So the challenge is how to achieve a clean and sanitary restroom environment without being overwhelmed by the task. Creating a hygienic restroom environment is easier than you might think. Here are 10 tips for selecting the right washroom dispensing systems to help make this goal a reality.
Make restroom hygiene a top priority. This may seem obvious, but it’s an important first step. You can’t achieve a goal until you establish it. And you can’t get others in your organization or facility to take this seriously until you communicate the importance of hygiene to everyone involved in maintaining the restroom.
Choose quality restroom products. Quality products not only show visitors that you care about the restroom environment, they also upgrade the image of the restroom and help make a better impression. In addition, quality products perform better. Which will lead to a more hygienic restroom? A soap dispenser that clogs so people can’t wash up properly or leaves a messy residue on the countertops or a soap system that not only dispenses properly but also lasts longer? Paper towels that dispense one-at-a-time or towels that come out in bunches or that tab and tear, leaving trash on the counters and floors?
Purchase high-capacity restroom systems. Nothing says “unhygienic” more than the absence of toilet paper, hand soap or hand towels in a restroom. One way to help ensure an adequate supply of product, as well as to ease maintenance headaches and reduce costs and waste, is to purchase high-capacity dispensing systems. High capacity systems help reduce product run-out by lasting longer and offering less frequent product change-outs.
Select systems that offer controlled dispensing. How a product is dispensed can have a big impact on waste reduction and restroom cleanliness. If your folded towel system isn’t working properly; dispensing several towels at a time or tabbing out when people reach for a single towel; it is creating more waste because more towels are dispensed than are actually needed. This can lead to unsightly restroom clutter and can also increase product costs, due to waste and over-consumption.
Adopt touch-free technology. People often go to great lengths to avoid restroom germs by foot-flushing, elbow-pushing and towel-gripping. One way to alleviate these concerns and create a more hygienic restroom environment is through no-touch products and systems. By eliminating one possible source of cross-contamination, touch-free dispensers can help reduce the spread of germs. It’s important to keep in mind that touchless systems don’t have to be electronic. For example, there are simple, mechanical no-touch towel dispensers, with no levers to pull and no batteries to replace, that provide the same hygienic benefits as sensor-activated dispensers.
Select attractive dispensers. Aesthetically pleasing dispensers enhance the look of the restroom and can help give it a cleaner, fresher appearance.
Remember that names do matter. People overwhelmingly prefer well-known brand-name products when away from home, according to the results of a 1997 survey. So select well-known washroom products to help create a feeling of home-like comfort in the restroom.
Purchase easy maintenance systems. High-capacity dispensers that are easy to refill minimize maintenance time and make a better impression on visitors. These systems can also lead to less supply run-out and a reduction in labor costs.
Look for durable, vandal-resistant fixtures. In a 1999 survey, more than three-quarters of respondents said that broken or vandalized dispensers in public restrooms would negatively affect their overall opinion of the facility. An even greater number, 82 percent, said broken, damaged or vandalized dispensers would lead them to think the restroom was neglected by management, while more than half said these conditions would cause them to view the restroom as unsanitary. So install dispensers made of durable materials.
Don’t forget the soap. The CDC states that hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent germ transmission. So it can be disconcerting to restroom patrons when soap is not available. It’s important to offer a high-capacity soap system that lasts longer, works properly and is easy to refill and maintain. Look for a wall-mounted replaceable soap system that provides a new, clean dispenser with each refill as well as hundreds of hand washes per unit, or a counter-mounted system with a disposable cartridge. Both will last longer and help eliminate drips, leaks and clogs.
In today’s climate of heightened germ awareness, it’s more important than ever to provide a sanitary and hygienic restroom environment. While striving for cleanliness and hygiene may seem like a difficult task, consider it a marketing advantage. A truly clean and hygienic restroom is a valuable asset in a competitive business environment.
